Today Ken decided he wanted to go on the scheduled excursion. Loren and Marilyn were leading us through Ted Turner's land. The gates which are usually locked were open so we took advantage of it. We headed toward Engle, NM and then just kept going north and eastish. We all look for two animals: oryx and javelinas.
The far mountains have fresh snow this morning. |
An oryx |
The
Oryx gazella were released at the
White Sands Missile Range and have become an invasive species of concern at the adjacent
White Sands National Monument. And the javelinas are similar to wild pigs (only much meaner).
A long line of "jeeps" ready to head out. |
We headed out of TRC toward Engle then headed in a northeasterly fashion following a narrow jeep road along the boundary fence which most of the time was the boundary between Uncle Teddy's land and the White Sands Missile Base.

Sharon and Rags (I think) |
We're just standing here hold our arms waiting on the men (as usual). |
This mountain is waaaay out there. |
The beginning of the cactus forest Marilyn told me about. |
Looking out over the cactus forest to the mountains. |
More cactus forest |
The forest was the designated "go for a walk" walk for the women. |
These cactus look particularly vicious. |
We were "comforted" near the end by these vehicles by the fence. It was a wonderful day. Thanks Loren and Marilyn
