Bierocks? Runzas? Fall Colors!!

Maurene's son and wife came visiting a couple of weeks ago.  She made Bierocks.  Kara wanted to learn how so Sunday was set as Bierock day.
They prepared to make a lot of them.  Notice the three bags of bread dough that is just about ready to explode?

Deb, Linda and I (Charlene and Carol wandered in and out) went to kibitz and watch.   As we visited someone said their family called them runzas and BINGO I remembered Adeline talking about them.  Deb's MIL just calls them cabbage rolls.
Whatever - they invited us all to have dinner.  (OF COURSE we didn't turn it down!)  Here are about 1/2 of them ready to go into plastic bags.  Yum!  Thanks Maurene.  Several of us could see adding just a hint of green chile to the recipe.  :)
We are working hard on Kara/Leo's bucket list.  Next was the tripup the Monticello Box Canyon to view the fall colors.  Ken decided he could go so we loaded up Jan/Ray in with us.  Leo/Kara went with Maurene/Bill; Kathy/Doug in their jeep with Newell/Linda and Cincinnati Jim/Claire with them.
A nice slow easy trip up the canyon crossing the creek (no monsoon now) 100+ times or so.  We brought up the rear and I stayed way back to stay out of the dust.
Monticello from the just before the pavement ends.

Kara/Maurene not getting out at the first stop.  They haven't been up before.

I always have to take this picture.
Head'em up and move'em out!
We're burning daylight!!!

Doug/Bill stand in from of a tree backdrop.  They are just starting to change at Monticello.

New Mexico rock formations are intriguing.  This one just juts out of the hill - no other rocks around.
More trees that are just loosing their green and a bald knob in the background.
Linda and Claire give up leaf watching to look for rocks.  Yes we are a muti task kind of group.
Two or three miles up we see the Salt Cedar turning orange.  For a garbage tree they sure are pretty when the orange comes out in them.
A lone guy continues to scarf up the meager grass and pays our little caravan no attention.  The grass in NM is VERY high in protein and nutrients but still it takes acres per cow than cows per acre I grew up with in Eastern Oregon.
Leo playing in the water. Remember what your mother told you about that, Leo??? hmmmm?

Still no vibrant yellow/oranges yet.
Follow the leader.

Someone thought these were baby buffalo balls but I don't think so as the vines are too tiny to handle a 2" sphere.
We stopped at the corrals and Leo brought Kara some "sticks" for a project she is doing.  Isn't that Ssswwweeettt?
Jan, Kathy and Maurene the dog exciter.

They HAVE to let us drive up the road (crossing the creek repeadedly!!)as it is a county/state road.  But do NOT go away from the road.  There was a lot more signage this year reiterating that fact.
The rock with the hole in it is always a favorite.

The sign across the road says "Main Road" with an arrow point up the creek.
The channel has changed so much there spot isn't as pretty as in the past but I took a pic anyway.

A few more colors are appearing.

    LUNCH!!!

and

         POTTY!!!

More color changes.

(sorry for the big break - sometimes I really HATE Blogger!!!)
More water, of course!

More rocks!

And here is the actual box!! Woohooo!

Here is Ray taking Jan's pictures at the head of the box.  Now we hot footed it to Winston for an ice cream bar.  ONE of these days we're going to simply turn around and go back down just to see different scenery,

Happy Birthday Debbie - Gee You're Getting OLD!!

Happy Birthday Debbie!!  We went to the Legion to celebrate and christen the new (2nd) pool table.

Do you EVER sit still?
Yes when you get older you DO have to worry about gas!  Sucks to be you!!
Miss Johanna congratulating Debbie (who has her mouth full of popcorn.  Yes, she DOES need the roughage in her old age.  Gas, you know!)

Bill still likes the old table.  The girls like the new one.  Great addition to the Legion - new floor, 2nd pool table.  What more could we need?  (Roughage!)

A good time for ALL!!  Dave took her out to dinner while the rest of us went back to cook our fresh oysters that were Fed Exed in today,
We cooked 200 oysters tonight - yummy!!   This is the fifth years we have participated in the oyster fest.  We can get 7,  1/2 gallons of smalls (I wouldn't want to see the mediums!!)  Clay gave Linda Sharon's recipe for cole slaw.  It was good but needed just a touch more garlic.  Maurene tried one and Kara tried a couple or so.  The rest of the crew just enjoyed them: Newell, Ken, Clay, Ki, Leo, Dave, Linda, Wyn and myself.  They were harvested Tuesday and shipped 2nd day air.  Thanks Sharon for teaching us the "right" way to cook them.  And Clay even cooked the first pan full.  Another great night in NM!

Bountiful Baskets - Deming Style

 All pictures by Linda Zeller

Saturday we did a ladies trip to Deming. Why?  Circular logic.  We needed to go to Deming to get the food baskets so we added a trip to the bead store - Black Hat.  Also we needed to go to the bead store so we decided to order Bountiful Baskets.

:)  The truck was due at 2 pm so we arrived at 2.  :)  The truck had been 1.5 hours early and the baskets were all filled and ready for pickup.  I'd asked Linda to take pictures of the process.
The VAC (Volunteer Area Coordinator) lives in Deming and is also the VSC (Volunteer Site Coordinator) for the drop at the St Claire Winery. - Pam Hilton is a Green River Wyoming gal.  Very nice and ready to help me get one started in TRC.    I'm finding out every area does some things differently - which is bad it's just different.  Pam numbers her baskets and tells you which numbers to pick up.

Here are the three baskets I ordered (Wyn, Cheryl & Linda/Me).

Romaine lettuce, celery, tomatoes, red onion, butternut squash and kale are this week's treasures.

Maurene picking up one of the baskets Kara ordered for Kara & Maurene/Claire.
What a beautiful day in the orchard.  AND what a good place for a drop.  Gave me good ideas about drop options.

We went together and got Honey Crisp Apples (.78/lb!!!) so I'd brought my wheel box to transport them to the pkp.  We also had the 12v cooler if we needed it.  - Works very well for lettuce, kale, etc.

Wyn has the other baskets ready to fill.

Maurene got granola and 5 loaves of bread.  Her bag is full of pineapple and celery.
What a great day it was - Wyn, Kara, Maurene and your truly.  Linda taking the pictures.
Wyn and I do the final checkout and visit with Pam and her backup (red shirt).
Back in EB we unload and distribute.  We got 5 baskets.  I shared with Linda; Maurene shared with Claire.

I have work to do to get ready to open - forge ahead.
