Hayden Day 12

We are still in prayer mode for Hayden.  The steps are so small and incremental one thins they don't matter.  But they do.  You can circle the globe 1 mm at a time - it just takes time.
The latest from Lori:
We won't know if kidneys will function until tested then. Dr.'s moved Hayden to ventilator and morphine, now she opens her beautiful blue eyes but is pretty out of it! Still praying for complete healing!
Hayden is still improving slowly. Dr's are watching enlarged liver and pancreas. Right lung will need 1 year with no high elevation trips due to damage - hopefully this will improve or she can grow out of it! Still on kidney dialysis for a few weeks.

Hayden Day 9

Hayden's update: Sat & Sun were good, Mon & Tues not so good. Wed: removed from oscellator @ 360 breaths/min.(& off paralysis meds). Now on Respirator & sedation. She will be able to cough & help clear lungs now. BP went up due to change but heart should relax soon.

Hayden woke up a few times yesterday when coughing! Erick was standing there & said "It's OK honey, Daddy's here." and she reached up and touched his face! Thank God! (HUS can cause brain damage as well as damage any & all other organs in her body). She still has double organ failure (lungs & kidneys) but are praying that they heal & function soon! Still on kidney dialasis for a few weeks.)

Diary of a sick little girl!

Haydan and Dad Erick January 21, 2011
On Wednesday Feb 16th our 2 year old Great Granddaughter Hayden was admitted into the Pourde Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.  Her oxygen levels were at 62.  Over the next couple of days her illnesses escalated drastically and the doctors gave little hope of her surviving.  She was flown to Denver Children's Hospital where she remains today.  She has RSV  which turned into double pneumonia which in turn turned into HUS which has caused her kidneys to fail.    As she has turned a small corner to recovery the ancillary conditions must be monitored closely.  The roller coaster ride is far from over.
RSV to pneumonia:RSV is also responsible for about 25% of childhood pneumonias. There are a wide variety of other causes of pneumonias, each with their own typical story. As you might imagine, it can be difficult to distinguish between bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Pediatricians rely on the story, the physical exam, and sometimes X-rays to separate them.Read more: http://www.drgreene.com/qa/rsv-and-croup#ixzz1EiUOZFCa
Pneumonia to HUS:  The pneumonia is a "strep" kind which is one of the more serious.  This kind can move into the blood and that is exactly what it did where it turned in HUS - Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.  http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/125/1/e174
As she has turned a small corner to recovery the ancillary conditions must be monitored closely and then will be monitoring other organs as she progresses.  The roller coaster ride is far from over.
These are the posts that her "Grrrmama" Schram (Lori) sent to me by text message or posted in Facebook.
Monday Feb 21
Sat. & Sun. were good healing days. Today wasn't quite as good. We learned that HUS can also affect the liver! The Dr.'s did tests today and it looks OK, but are now watching for blood clots! The Dr's and nurses here at Children's Hosp. are the best! They are keeping a close eye on her. Keep healing baby girl!
Monday Feb 21 - Hayden's current status: Stable but critical.
Sunday Feb 20 10:00pm : New lungs x-ray for Hayden is awesome! They are clearing up rapidly!!!!!
Sun Feb 20 10:00
It has been tough here and hard to answer all of your messages. I would like to thank ALL of you for your wonderful comments and especially the Prayers! Keep the prayers coming because Hayden has a long way to go. We are looking at 2 (?) weeks in ICU alone! THANK YOU and GOD BLESS all of you!
She is doing better with the dialasis machine and the chest tube to take fluids off the sack around her lungs. She is on an oscillator to help her breath and to break up the pneumonia, but has to be sedated so she doesn't fight the machine! Dr's are hoping to put her back on respirator tomorrow and keep her sedated. It is all so unbelievable! She turned 2 on Feb. 9th!
Hayden is still making baby steps toward recovery, but has so much to overcome! She has RSV (a serious virus in children), double pneumonia, a blood infection that turned into HUS (this kills red blood cells that carry oxygen. When the blood cells die, they go through the kidneys) and her kidneys are in failure. She is doing better with the dialasis machine and the chest tube to take fluids off the sack around her lungs.  Hayden got her dialasis cathater + a chest tube to the sack around lungs put in last night. Dr was afraid to move her from her bed to OR because she was so unstable. Dr said she was "the sickest little girl in the world." Surgery was done on her bed! Today she is still unstable but making baby steps improving! She will be here for a long time. Pray that it is all improvements because she has a LOT to recover from!
Fri Jan 18 10:46 pm
Hayden made it thru surgery! Still very unstable. Dr said "she is the sickest little girl in the world"!

Dr called in family before surgery. She was too unstable to move from bed to cart to OR. He said "She is the sickest little girl in the world" + he wasn't sure.......

Fri Feb 18 6:24 pm
Learning more. Hayden has RSV and Pneumonia and a blood infection that progressed to HUS (which kills red blood cells that carry oxygen to cells, therefore low oxygen.) HUS is also causing the kidneys to fail. VERY sick little princess!
Fri Feb 18 3:49 pm
Hayden (my 2 year old granddaughter) is having surgery today to put tube in sack around left lung (dbl pneumonia) + to install hemo kidney cathetor for dialasis (her kidneys are not functioning!) Please keep praying :)
Fri Feb 18 12:33pm
Progression on Hayden...high temps (104.3) RSV to dbl pneumonia, oxygen level @ 68, blood infection, transfusion, platelets. Blood infection to HUS. Kidneys not functioning. Right lung full, left over 30% pneumonia. Setting her up for dialasis surgery + possible surgery for chest tube to remove fluids around lungs. May be in hosp for weeks! Prayers Please!

Happy Valentine's Day and ND meets NM

I'm only feeding you ND beef Roady!

Don't turn your back on ME little mister!!

Happy Valentine's Day!  It was a good day in NM.  The sun is shinging; there is no wind and we are happy.  We had a Death by Chocolate night planned and I went to WW and got chocolate Cheesecake.  Then Gail came over and asked if I had thawed out hamburger to feed Roady.  No, but I'll take your picture.  Roady really likes North Dakota beef.

Gail and Roger leave next week.  I wonder who is going to thaw hamburger after that?

I goofed when I gave Ethan chocolate with peanuts in it for Valentine's Day so I bought them blinking glasses.  Even though they'll be late it's the thought that counts...........right?!?!?

Climbing Horton Hears a Whoo!

What a gorgeous day Sunday was in southern New Mexico. Hopefully the cold is gone for another year.  One can only hope.  While I was in CO/WY Gail and Roger did some exploring on their own and astounded us with the fact they had climbed Horton Hears a Whoo Mountain.  (The correct name for it is Turtleback Mountain, but you know me.  I only see Horton when I look up there. Yes, I've spent too much time watching kid movies.   Here is what I see and it is in blue.  :)

So anyway Linda came and asked me if I wanted to climb.  mmmmm maybe if I can find some shoes.  I have this pair of shoes that should be thrown away........you know the routine.  Ken remarked (that in itself it unusual) about me breaking an ankle.  So I rushed to WallyWorld and bought a pair of hikers, grabbed my walking stick Clay made me; gave Maynard one Emile had given me and off we went about 10:30 a.m.  Roger and Gail were the leaders with Deb/Dave; Fred/Chris; Newell/Linda; Maynard and me pulling up the rear.  What a climb and what a trail.  I believe there was more debris on this trail than any I've ever seen.  Thousand of rocks the size of your fist were part of the trail.  We climbed slowly but steadily.  Roger pulled up the rear keeping an eye on Maynard.  Fred, Chris and Mayno were the oldest ones in the group with Debbie pulling up the young end.  :)  So glad I bought the boots and took the stick.  Without them I would have just had them roll me off the mountain and leave me.  :)
Chris, Fred and Newell reached their threshold first.  I hadn't hit mine yet so kept going.  I finally came to a spot that had LOTS of huge rocks which I would have to climb over and it reached my brain that HOW was a going to get back down off them???? Hmmmm?  OK That was my threshold.  Deb went about another 100 yards and reached hers.  This left Roger, Gail, Maynard, Dave and Linda trekking onward.  After 30 minutes or so Deb and I went down where Fred, Chris and Newell were resting and overlooking the valley.

Dave and Maynard made it to the top; wrote their names and came back down.
And then we saw the others WAAYYY on ahead.  They were little bitty ants walking up the skyline.  I had the big camera with me but I couldn't hold it steady enough to get any better pictures.  The bottom line is Newell, Deb and I got down the mtn with me falling only once......my feet slid out from under me.  We got to the bottom at about 3:00 and went home.  Gail stayed at the first "hump"; Linda and Roger stopped at the second but Maynard and Dave made it all the way to the peak of Horton.  Of course the coming down wasn't a peice of cake for any of us. They made it home just before sunset.  It was a great day!

Gringo Appreciation Day!

16+ of us headed out to Palomas yesterday for the annual Pink Store party.  Sharon and Dennis went down and saved us 3 tables outside.  This year they had a large tent outside on the patio.  I think they were afraid of the cold as there was a heater in the tent.  Ken managed to get right by it and was happy all day.  As we went in the owner was handing out sombreros and blinking party sunglasses.  They had prepared for 500 and I'm sure there were that many as folks came and went.  There was a different setup for the food this year.  Each food station (other than the main one) was sponsored by an eye doctor; a dentist and a purse store.  As you went to get food you could also pick up a business card.  Food and drink was free.  We staked out our chairs and either went inside to "shop" or settle in to watch the people.  And there were some real characters there.
I'm thinking about changing the color scheme in the house.Yup - purple is there.
The bright colors are so cheerful.
 The inside view
 More inside
I'm sure these two were very tired last night.  they worked hard as did all the servers.  The town closes down and many of the businessmen come and help serve.

Cliffie, Darrel and one of the characters.  She was here last year.
Karen and Sue were having a GOOD time.
 So were Dianne and Lynn
This character is one of ours.  Dennis modeling Lynn's hat.
 Roger and ahem.........the character.
 Larry, Curlie and Mo
You can't take Dennis anywhere..
They invited dancers from Juarez to come entertain us.  They were great!

The awesome band and singers.
I was a little uncomfortable at first with this costume.  It was a little too close to seeing the Federales patrolling the street.  They soon changed into more colorful attire.

These four play a lot at The Pink Store

The beautiful costumes with yards and yards of bright material.

Sit down in front.
It was a wonderful relaxing day.  Ki and Wyn went with us and Ki drove.  I so enjoyed sitting in the back, visiting and doing "The Obsession".  We left after the entertainment and made it back to Arrey just in time for dinner on Steak Night.
